In 1911 in Wiltshire, a young orphan promises to find out the truth about her mother. Abandoned as a small child, Sally Brown was raised by a kindly rector and his wife. Now eighteen, she loves her adopted parents dearly, but longs to know why her birth family gave her up. When the formidable Harriet Fforde offers Sally a position at Littleford House, assisting with research into her family history, Sally is nervous but excited. Soon enough, Sally has made friends amongst the staff. And she’s caught the eye of Jack Price, a charming local man who seems almost too good to be true. But Harriet Fforde is mean-spirited, and her brother Wilfred seems deeply unnerved by Sally’s presence, while the research throws up more questions than answers.
