SA Author. This long awaited revised edition of a popular book on the well-known South Australian Colonial Painter, Mr Charles Hill is now finally available. The author has created an extensive archive of Charles Hill`s ancestors and descendants along with an extensive look at his early art education, career and his surprising attempt to open a hotel in Kensington. Through Mr Hill`s determination after his arrival in 1854 he established the S.A. School of Art, S.A. School of Design and most importantly the S.A. Society of Arts. Many of his paintings now hang in the S.A. Art Gallery, Ayres House and the Whyalla Civic centre. Mr Hill is mostly famous for painting many of South Australia`s prominent historical events including the magnificent, ‘Reading the Proclamation,’ depicting the ceremony at Glenelg in 1836 that now hangs proudly in Government House on North Terrace Adelaide. This edition includes details and images of the paintings by Charles Hill known to exist in Australia along with further family history and photographs not included in the first edition of 2023. The supplement section includes the history of the Curling family and the Kewson family that became associated with the Hill family through marriage.
