Epic in scope, The Music is Black opens with an exploration of the sound and identity of the African diaspora as shaped by imperialism and colonialism from the 1400s. It then surveys the Black British musical landscape between 1900-1970. Subsequent influential imports – rap and ragga – are discussed, before sections that cover the uniquely Black British genres: Lovers Rock, Brit Funk, 2 Tone, Jungle, Drum & Bass, Trip Hop, UK Garage and Grime. Each includes artist interviews, with histories from Carroll Thompson, Neville Staple, Kenny Wellington, Bluey Maunick, Fabio & Grooverider, Morcheeba, Megaman, DJ Target and Slimzee.
